New A380 not so good for love

a380We’re in Europe for a few days to attend my stepson’s university graduation in England. The trip from New Zealand – Australia to London was a long one. I was really looking forward to traveling on the new A380 plane that Emirates uses on its long haul flights. We’ve all heard the advertising – largest commercial jet in the world – all the mod cons – bar in the back of the plane. I was full of anticipation getting on the plane.

That’s where it ended. All the seats in business class are small cubicles – built for one. No more reaching over to hold my man’s hand. No more leaning in for a soft kiss before going to sleep. No more making comments about the guy farting in the seat in front of me. In fact, when you’re on the A380 you’re pretty much alone – unless you want to spend your time in the bar in the back.

a3802The first time I got up to use the restrooms I had to walk through the bar and every other time I went I saw the same people. Lovers spend their time in the bar because that’s the only place they can touch!

If you’re planning on taking a long flight anywhere with someone you’re really hot for, choose a different plane because the Emirates seating configuration on the new A380 won’t get you into the mile high club because there’s no place to “rev your engines” beforehand.

    Hi!
Never been in a A380 before. Thank you for sharing your thought.
    See you around.

    How amazing and strange!

It is so unexpected and jarring that the largest, most appointed, planes would be the most isolating… kind of like the line that large parties are the most intimate (because people break off into smaller, intimate, groups).

Hopefully once you landed you were able to get everything taken care of :)

Interesting thoughts. What you site as one of the big disadvantages of business class is exactly what I would consider the biggest advantage. Of course, I’m a solo business traveler so that makes things different.

I always wear long shirts on a plane because I would rather not touch the stranger in the seat next to me. I really prefer to disappear into my own world of a book, movie, or project on my laptop. Privacy and space are at such a premium on aircraft, the cubicles look awesome.

I guess that’s why they put full two person bedroom on some of the A380s, don’t they?

Thanks for the post. I was on holidays in Dubai, and just returned home. I also used A380, and I like it. I have seen somehing like before. It was equal to my expectations. Its a great progress in airlines)

What a unique configuration. I can see that business travelers would absolutely love it, but for everyone traveling with someone, it looks like you can’t even comfortably talk to them let alone snuggle up. Oh well, I’m not planning on flying business class any time soon.

Those airline seats seem perfect for the travelling businessman, but if you want love you gotta check out first class on Singapore Airlines which actually gives you your own private little rooms.

Hey, congrats on your son graduating. You must be proud.

Planes scare me but I do use them on occasion like once every couple of years when the desire to travel is stronger than my fear of flying.

However, from the photos, the A380 doesn’t look that hot from an aesthetic point of view. Reminds me a bit of EasyJet (heard of that airline?)

Anyway, hope you have a great time in London (I happen to live there too).

    take care…

If you don’t want to be bothered during those long flights, as I know sometimes I just want peace, even begging for peace and quiet!!!! – those planes must be great.

i have never seen any photos either. Wow and your ending was so cute. I have a fear of flying so I doubt anyone could get me very amorous during a flight anyway!!:-)))

A380 is more comfortable for businessman but really not for lovers, but of course, most airlines will opt for a more sensible seating configuration.

I’m not flying as much as when I had 51 countries as a territory, mostly flying on 747s in business class. I’d have paid a nickel extra for that cubicle then. I’ve not had the A380 experience. I guess they need a ‘couples’ or ‘lovers’ class. Hmmm. By the way, I’ve got a good many miles on me too, and I like your blog.

haha at least u know where your priorities are! Good on ya!
Though you didnt mention if theres ample room in the bathrooms for this “engine revving” you speak of…
